The Truth About The US Pig Industry...

The Truth About The US Pig Industry...
Hi Everyone!-

We hope your week has gone well and you are enjoying summer!

Rick is out on the road today delivering some beef & pork orders to Long Island, New Jersey, Westchester, Dutchess & Putnam Counties!

This time of year is our "busy" season... and we love it!

Today, I wanted to talk about pork with you as so much of the pork in the US is raised extremely poorly...

Why? Well, the main reason is the pigs are raised in controlled, sunlight-less, indoor environments...

These factory farms give pigs a HORRIBLE life...

But, 97% of pigs in the US are raised this way...

These pigs, who never see the light of day and are not able to be in mud, forage the land, and eat a mixture of elements to strengthen their bones, muscle, and immunity produce a meat that is a very pale pink...

The mama pigs are often kept in cages- and are not able to live a natural life...

As for the smell in these barns- it would be like breathing ammonia as the pigs waste is often in tanks below where the pigs are held and large fans are on to prevent the smell from becoming toxic to the animal...

In addition, because there are so many pigs, in such a small contained area, many of the producers give their pigs a small dose of antibiotic to keep them healthy and alive just long enough to get them to their butcher weight...

A research study also found that workers in these facilities were found to have MRSA in their systems and the reason behind pork from stores needing higher cooking temps is to kill the traces of MRSA that can be found in the store-bought pork..

It is sad- because for anybody who has been to our farm, you would see the pigs have a really joyful energy..

They are so sweet...

So, at Freedom Farms we work really hard to give our pigs a great life...

We are currently fencing a large area out back that is dense with forage for them to dig into, eat, and take nutrients from...

As a result, the meat we produce will have a really dark pink, almost red pigmentation to it.. making for an amazing tasting pork from a pig that had a GREAT life of pastured living, social interaction, and a good time with his/ her litter mates!

That is WHY we do what we do- to not only produce great proteins and food for our great customers, but to make sure our animals are living a very natural life... a healthy life... one that we can all be proud of...

The only reason you would raise pigs in an environment that is contained is to produce max pigs and get the BIG fast- which is just not how agriculture works.. time is heavily involved in the growing process (much like people) and it can not be rushed if you are going for quality vs. quantity..

At our farm, we raise a limited number of pigs and cows each year- so when we are out of stock, we are out of stock until the next class comes in!

Right now, on farm we have about 7 full-size pigs that are ready to go to butcher.. and 7 pigs that will be ready in a few months... and then a class of piglets that will be ready next spring...

We can not speed that up!

So, if you would like to try some amazing farm-raised pork, you can! *while supplies last :)

Many of our customers have bought smokers and are enjoying smoking pork shoulders, pork butts, and fresh pork bellies! It is actually a very therapeutic process and forces one to manage the meat and embrace time!
